Beyond Meat is a plant-based meat substitute company from Los Angeles. It was founded in 2009 by Ethan Brown based on the mission of The Future of Protein®. It is about making delicious alternative meats made from simple plant-based ingredients.
By making this switch, the company is addressing the four issues that are directly tied to livestock production. These four issues are our health, how livestock is affecting the climate, limited natural resources, and the lives of animals.
Burgers are the most popular meat product out there. In 2016, the first plant-based patty was sold in the meat section of a grocery store. Besides burgers, this company also makes plant-based chicken and pork sausages.
When compared to a regular patty, one made by this company uses 99% less water, 93% less land, 90% fewer greenhouse gases are emitted, and 46% less energy spent. All of this information was collected by a study conducted by the University of Michigan.
Why People Should Look Into Vegan Foods
When making the change and consuming Beyond Meat products, consumers get a plant-based protein that is delicious, nutritious and isn’t hurting the environment.
Let’s look at a research published by the Archives of Internal Medicine. According to the study, when comparing the health of meat eaters and non-meat eaters, people who consumed meat were at a 16% increased risk of getting cancer. This same study also found a 21% increased risk of developing heart disease in those eating meat.
A study published under the title title “Livestock & Climate Change” found that over 50% of all greenhouse gas emissions are caused by raising and processing livestock. Another study found that 29% of the water available is used for animal production.
Also, half of the Earth’s land is used for raising livestock. Finally, over 66 billion animals are killed every year for food. To get a better understanding of this number, this comes out to be about 2,100 animals a second.
Products and Recipes
Beyond Meat products are made from a variety of natural and vegan ingredients. The burger patty, for example, consists of a mix of pea protein, rice protein, mung bean protein, and coconut oil along, with other natural ingredients.
Their burger patty has 250 calories, zero cholesterol, 20 grams of protein, and 25% of your daily recommended amount of iron.
Something that helps set Beyond Meata apart from similar manufacturers is the recipe section of their website. There are recipes for things like vegan Chicago sausage dogs, tacos, nachos, and chicken sandwiches.
Each recipe includes the number of people it serves, the prep and cook time, and an ingredient list. That way, they make it possible for vegans to enjoy all the beauties meat provides, minus the negative effects.
How Does Beyond Meat Compare to Other Companies
On the YouTube channel Good Mythical Morning, two people did a taste test where they tried eight different vegetarian or vegan burgers. Out of all eight burgers, the company that had the best burger was Beyond Meat.
While other competitors were described as having hard patties that were unswallowable, green patties, or too subtle a taste, Beyond Meat hits differently. Their burger patty looks like and has the texture of a meat patty and is greasy like a regular hamburger. But it is something better.
A patty costs about $3.74, but it is money well spent because this is the best vegan patty on the market. There are 20 grams of plant-based protein, its made from organic ingredients, it is kosher, and the patty does not have soy or gluten in it.
