What is in Dairy?
Humans have been consuming milk for many years, but that doesn’t mean that it is entirely right for you. Milk contains many growth hormones that are designed to help calves grow strong and healthy. Calves need growth hormones when they are young and developing, much like babies.
Milk also contains lactose. Many people may have a mild lactose intolerance that they are not even aware of. The resulting breakouts may be an irritation or allergic reaction to lactose.
Why Does it Cause Breakouts?
Milk contains the proteins whey and casein, which when processed by our bodies creates a hormone that is similar to insulin. The production of this hormone is known to cause breakouts. Many times the hormones from milk can interact with our body’s natural hormones. This may cause some confusion in our endocrine system, which can lead to breakouts.
What Does the Research Say?
Researchers have had a difficult time narrowing down what exactly is the agent in milk that causes acne. There are various theories, and it may be several factors that are different depending on the individual.
One theory is that many dairy cows are given artificial hormones that can affect their milk and production. This can be detrimental to our skin by interacting negatively with our hormones. By consuming milk products, we may ingest these artificial hormones.
A new theory may be that the natural growth hormones that are found in milk may trigger acne. The growth hormones, while suitable for young calves, may not be ideal for humans.
Another theory may be that the artificial sugars in milk combined with the other refined sugar products in our diets may cause the skin to be unhealthy. There are many theories surrounding milk and dairy consumption. We recommend finding alternatives below as opposed to the continuing use of dairy.
What Are Some Vegan Alternatives?

There are several vegan alternatives to milk. Most of these are plant based and all natural. Our personal favorite is coconut milk. It is sweet and delicious to add to a cup of coffee or even cereal.
The other alternatives include almond, macadamia, cashew, hazelnut, hemp, oat, and rice milk. These are all great sources of vitamins and minerals. They are also perfect for adding a little bit of sweetness and flavor to your foods.
